Dear Colleagues, The Annual Conference is always a yeasty mix of news about the Commission, practical guidance on accreditation matters, and presentations on broader areas of interest to higher education, such as assessment of student learning. This year we will offer multiple sessions on the two major Commission projects of the last few years, which are now in early implementation: the Open and Standard Pathways for Reaffirmation of Accreditation, first introduced in April 2009, and the revised Criteria for Accreditation. The new electronic Assurance System is ready for prime time, and there will be lots of opportunities to play with it. For AQIP institutions we will host discussions about whether and if so how AQIP might be modified in the coming months. Beyond Commission matters, you will find the usual plethora of sessions on topics of shared interest. I hope you will share our particular eagerness to hear the two keynotes: Elsa Nunez, President of Eastern Connecticut State University, recently ranked #1 in retention of Hispanic students, and Candace Thille, Director of Carnegie Mellon University’s Open Learning Initiative. 2013 is the year for reauthorization of the Higher Education Opportunity Act; we’ll have lots to talk about when we gather in Chicago April 7-9. I look forward to seeing you there.

Pathways and the New Criteria at the 2013 Annual ConferenceIn September 2012 many institutions began the transition into the new Pathways model for reaffirmation of accreditation: Standard Pathway, Open Pathway, and AQIP Pathway. In addition, on January 1, 2013, the new Criteria for Accreditation are effective for accredited institutions. The 2013 Annual Conference will offer a variety of opportunities to gain information about both of these important initiatives. See the Commission’s website for details about Pathways and the new Criteria. Transitioning to PathwaysThe General Program will include a number of sessions on the Open, Standard, and AQIP Pathways. Commission staff will provide the latest information on Pathways and will offer special sessions to assist institutions in making a smooth transition. Attendees will hear from institutions participating in the Demonstration Project for the Open Pathway and will have an opportunity to view and test the new Assurance System. Pre-conference workshops will provide assistance to those institutions that will have early responsibilities in the new Pathways model. Implementing the Criteria for AccreditationSessions in the General Program will explain the new Criteria, provide the details of implementation, and focus on specific topics or themes within the new Criteria.
